When I was Girl Scout, we used to sing: Make new friends, but keep the old; one is silver, and the other gold.
This summer I was responsible for planning my twenty-year high school reunion. Thankfully, I had some great people helping me to plan and prepare, and even better dates for the event. Carin Farley and Amanda Howard, next to Biz, are my oldest and dearest friends. Whenever we are together, it's as if no time has passed, and we laugh and howl until our old lady bones can't take it any more! Recently, we got to hang out in Vegas together, but the reunion was fun, too.
Amanda and I first met in Middle School, and she used to come over to lay by my pool and we would put Sun-in in each other's hair. We rode the bus together, worked at Video City together, and made general mischief; for a time we'd meet late on Saturdays, after hanging with other separate friends, to watch Saturday Night Live on TV. Carin and I met in high school- I can't remember how- but our inside jokes, our work at Dominos Pizza, our Science Club trips and our former boyfriends helped forge an unbreakable bond between us.
Bringing these ladies back to me, and knowing that there were other friends brought together by the reunion, made the planning worthwhile. The reunion was at a swanky Newport hotel and featured some hilarious moments that I wouldn't trade for the world. I particularly had fun with my old neighbor Nick Peters, my Senior Class President Brendan Sullivan, and a very hilarious old friend named Erin Rowe.
My prayer for my boys: Find great, loving people as friends, people who lift you up and make you laugh and are there for you across the miles. Look back with gladness and gratitude. Stay connected at the very least, and help bring people together when you can.
